Why is my average grade so low?
Not all assignments have as much impact on your average. For example a quiz will often count towards less than 10% of your average. Where a final exam may be up to 20%. Check your syllabus to see what each assignment is worth.
I missed an exam-what do I do?
Whenever you miss an assignment--especially an exam, the best thing to do is immediately contact your professor and explain the circumstances around your missed exam. Make sure that you are honest. Professors often hear many different excuses for missed assignments--honesty is always preferred. Make sure that you take responsibility and be apologetic. The professor may choose to reschedule your exam at our testing center, but may also choose to deny your request. Remember that it never hurts to ask. Make sure that you communicate with your professor and the testing center. Leave enough time to take the test. Bring your identification and any materials that you might need for the test. Some of our tests require a Scantron, which you can purchase in the bookstore. Others might require a Blue Writing booklet. Get to the testing site early to sign in on time for the exam.
I don’t understand an assignment-how can I get more information?
The best idea is to speak with your professor about the assignment, you can also speak with other students, and you can also go to the ASC (Academic Support Center) for additional assistance. The best idea is to combine all three.
I didn’t turn in an assignment-how can I get another opportunity?
You must ask your professor. Professors often are willing to work around accidents, especially if you talk to them. They might be able to give you an extension or direct you to additional work. Please remember to always talk to your professor first, before deciding that you need to withdraw or that you are failing the class.
I think that I am failing the class-what do I do now?
First of all, always talk to your professor. You might not be failing! Even if you are, your professor needs to be your first stop as they might be able to work with you--depending on your circumstances. If your professor confirms that you are failing and does not suggest any alternatives, you might want to consider requesting a withdrawal from the class. Once again, your professor is your first stop as they can withdraw you at any point during the semester--as long as you are eligible for a withdrawal from the class.
